African American caregiver’s unhealed collective historical trauma is often an unacknowledged risk factor that creates missed opportunities for tapping into the deep reservoir of resilience that is found in a belief in something greater than oneself. For Afrikan Ancestry people groups, connection to “Spirit”, which is not the same as being “Spiritual”, is an often-forgotten protective factor in times of distress. This includes caring for loved ones who are experiencing mental illness.
